Bihar’s political climate is heating up as the Election Commission of India (ECI) begins a special drive to update the voter list ahead of the Bihar Assembly Elections 2025. RJD Allegations: Vote Deletion and Fraud

In a sharp attack on the Election Commission and the ruling BJP-JD(U) alliance, Tejashwi Yadav alleged that the ongoing voter list revision is part of a “deep conspiracy” to eliminate the votes of Dalits, OBCs, EBCs, and minorities, while simultaneously facilitating the addition of fake voters.

“The Modi-Nitish regime is working through the Election Commission to crush the Constitution and snatch away people’s voting rights. If the very vote of a citizen is deleted, what remains of democracy and the Constitution?” said Yadav in a strongly worded tweet.

The RJD maintains that the voter list update is being carried out without proper public outreach and with unrealistic deadlines, thereby disenfranchising a significant portion of Bihar’s working-class population—especially those employed in other states.

RJD Takes the Matter to the Supreme Court

Taking its protest a step further, the RJD has filed a petition in the Supreme Court challenging the Election Commission’s decision. The petition, submitted by RJD Rajya Sabha MP Manoj Jha, demands an immediate halt to the voter list revision process.

The RJD argues that:

• Millions of Biharis work in other states and may not be able to return within the 18-day timeframe.

• The rejection of commonly used ID documents like Aadhaar and ration cards is unfair and discriminatory.

• The ECI’s insistence on only 11 accepted documents lacks constitutional backing and violates Article 326, which guarantees universal adult suffrage.

Manoj Jha emphasized that people should not be denied their fundamental right to vote due to bureaucratic rigidity or political interference.

As part of the Special Summary Revision 2025, the Election Commission of India is conducting door-to-door verification and updating voter rolls across Bihar. Citizens are required to fill out forms and provide any one of 11 approved documents to confirm their eligibility and maintain their names on the list.

• Inaccessible to migrant workers, who are outside Bihar for employment.

• Overly complex, due to the rejection of widely held ID documents like Aadhaar.

Tejashwi Yadav has repeatedly questioned the legal foundation of the Election Commission’s decision to demand only 11 specific documents. Citing Article 326 of the Indian Constitution, he argued that every citizen has the right to vote based on universal adult suffrage and that the ECI should not impose arbitrary document restrictions.

“Does the Election Commission have the authority to demand only 11 documents? On what constitutional basis are other identity proofs like Aadhaar or ration cards being rejected?” he asked during a press briefing.

Tejashwi also warned that if the process is not halted or modified, RJD will launch a statewide agitation, mobilizing people to defend their voting rights on the streets.

While RJD continues its offensive, the ruling parties—BJP and JD(U)—have dismissed the allegations as baseless and accused Tejashwi of spreading misinformation to create political unrest.

A senior BJP leader said,

“The voter list update is a constitutional requirement conducted across the country. The process is transparent, and there is no conspiracy. The RJD is trying to politicize a routine electoral process for votes.”

However, the public sentiment, especially among migrant families, daily wage earners, and minority communities, remains tense. Many believe that the deadline is too short, and awareness efforts have been inadequate.
